Code of Ethics for Education Abroad

Last updated October14th, 2025

At Istmo Retreat and Adventures, we believe that education abroad should transform lives while honoring the communities and environment that make these experiences possible. As members of The Forum on Education Abroad, our Code of Ethics reflects our commitment to learners, local partners, and the natural and cultural richness of Panama.

Responsibility to Learners

We design programs that are engaging, accessible, and meaningful. We encourage participants to reflect on their experiences, communicate respectfully across cultures, and grow as responsible global citizens.

Honesty and Transparency

We are open and truthful in how we describe, promote, and deliver our programs. Our policies and pricing are clear, and we make decisions with the best interests of our learners and partners in mind.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

At Istmo Retreat and Adventures, we are committed to providing a safe, healthy, and inclusive environment for all study abroad participants. Our health and safety protocols are guided by the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring that every student—regardless of background, identity, or ability—feels respected, supported, and secure during their experience in Panama.

We apply our safety measures equitably and with cultural sensitivity, taking into account diverse needs and perspectives. We work proactively to remove barriers to full participation, provide accessible communication and support, and respond promptly to any health, safety, or wellbeing concerns. Discrimination, harassment, or exclusion of any kind are not tolerated.

Through continuous reflection and improvement, we strive to foster a respectful environment where all students can thrive, learn, and engage safely across cultures.

Reciprocity and Community Respect

Our work is rooted in partnership with local communities. We recognize the impact of our presence and seek relationships that are mutually beneficial, respectful of culture, and mindful of power dynamics. Our programs prioritize authentic engagement over performative tourism.

Sustainability

We integrate sustainable practices into our operations, from sourcing food locally to protecting the environment. We want learners to understand that education abroad can contribute to the well-being of both people and the planet.

Health, Safety, and Well-Being

We prioritize the physical, emotional, and intellectual safety of our participants. Programs include preparation, risk awareness, and support systems to ensure well-being.

Accountability and Growth

We take responsibility for our actions and continuously strive to improve our programs. We learn from feedback, adapt to challenges, and remain committed to high ethical standards.

At Istmo, our goal is to create education abroad experiences that not only enrich learners but also support the people, cultures, and ecosystems of Panama.
