Educational opportunities found nowhere else on earth
One country. Two oceans. A geological land bridge that changed the world. Indigenous living cultures. The world's most strategic waterway. No other destination delivers this much academic depth in a single week.
Two Oceans, One Extraordinary Country
Swim in the Pacific at sunrise and the Caribbean by sunset. Panama is the only place on earth where you can experience both oceans in a single day, study the engineering marvel of the Canal, and hike the Continental Divide where dramatically different ecosystems collide.

World-Class Research & Rare Geological History
Access the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute's facilities and scientists while exploring the last part of the Americas to rise from the ocean—a land bridge that transformed global ocean currents and enabled species migration between continents just 3 million years ago.

Authentic Cultural Crossroads
Engage with indigenous Emberá and Guna communities (arriving by traditional dugout canoe), explore Afro-Caribbean heritage in historic Portobelo (once the hub of Spain's treasure fleet), and witness how diverse populations have shaped this strategic country.

Compact Geographic Laboratory
Rainforest, cloud forest, mangroves, mountains, black and white sand beaches, and two coastlines—all within a day-trip from our retreat center. No other destination offers this much ecological diversity in such a concentrated area.

Easy Access, Real Value
With direct flights from Miami (2.5 hours) and Denver (4 hours), getting here is easy. Costs are lower than European programs with similar academic depth, and since Panama uses the US dollar, budgeting is simple. Plus, our single-country location means easier logistics than multi-stop South American itineraries.

About Istmo & Panama
Yes. Istmo maintains comprehensive health and safety protocols as Forum on Education Abroad members, including 24/7 emergency support, US-trained EMT on staff, and multiple medical facilities within 10 minutes. Panama's crime rates in our area are comparable to US college towns. The US State Department currently lists Panama as Level 2, the same rating as most of Western Europe and Costa Rica.
Our dry season runs December through April, which aligns perfectly with J-term, spring break, and May term. This is when Panama is at its most accessible and weather is most predictable. We do run programs year-round — Panama's rainy season (May–November) is lush and beautiful and rarely affects programming, though afternoon showers are common. We can run programs in any academic calendar window.
Istmo is the only all-inclusive retreat center in Panama—lodging, dining, meeting spaces, and activities all on one 4-acre property. Unlike programs that coordinate between hotels and restaurants, faculty focus on teaching while we handle everything. We're Forum on Education Abroad members with M.Ed. and Environmental Engineering leadership.
Spanish language, environmental science, engineering (Panama Canal), geology, Latin American studies, sociology, community service learning, public health, business/economics, and education programs all thrive in Panama's diverse learning environment.
Panama offers unique educational opportunities found nowhere else: two oceans in one day, the Panama Canal engineering marvel, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute access, indigenous cultural immersion, and the geographic bridge between continents. Programs are 90 minutes from Panama City, making logistics simpler than multi-country itineraries.
Fly into Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama City.
Most travelers from the US, Canada, Europe, and many other countries do not need a visa. Learn more about Panama’s visa policy.
Panama enjoys a tropical climate, with two main seasons: the dry season and the rainy (green) season.
- Dry season (Mid-December to Mid-April): Expect sunny, warm weather with little to no rain—ideal for escaping the cold up North.
- Transitional season (Late April to Early May): The dry season shifts into the green season, so you may experience a mix of sunny and rainy days as the lush season begins.
- Green/rainy season (June to November): This is our favorite time of year when the countryside is at its greenest. Afternoon rain showers are common but typically short, lasting no more than two hours. Most of the day remains clear for outdoor activities, and the rain offers a refreshing break from the heat.
- Rainiest months (October & November): While these are the wettest months, rain usually comes in short bursts, so it’s rare to experience all-day rain. Tropical showers are often a welcome cool down.
We’re about 1 hour 45 minutes from PTY, depending on traffic.
Panama uses the US dollar.
Absolutely! We accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary needs. Just let us know in advance.
During regular hours, an English-speaking hospital is just a 15-minute drive from our property. For emergencies after 9 PM, there is a 24-hour public hospital only 7 minutes away. Additionally, our owner, Sean Davis, is a trained EMT, and in case of an emergency, we’ll personally assist in getting you to the nearest clinic.
Please note that we require all participants to purchase travel insurance, as we are not liable for medical expenses. You will also be asked to complete a waiver form before your stay.
In most areas of Panama, including Istmo Retreat, the tap water is generally considered safe to drink. However, if you're staying in more rural areas or places where water quality may vary, it's recommended to drink bottled or purified water for peace of mind.
At Istmo, we provide purified drinking water for all our guests to ensure you stay hydrated and comfortable throughout your stay.
During the day, mosquitos are not a problem. They typically come out at dawn and dusk, so we recommend wearing light long sleeves and pants or using bug spray during those times.
Panama vs. Other Educational Destinations?
Panama offers the Panama Canal, two oceans in one day, and lower costs. Costa Rica has more established eco-tourism but higher prices and more tourist-saturated experiences.
Panama provides comparable academic depth at 40-50% lower cost, 2.5-hour flights from Miami (vs. 8-10 hours to Europe), and fewer visa complications. US dollar currency eliminates exchange rate issues.
Panama's compact geography means less travel time between experiences. All major attractions within 2 hours of our retreat center vs. multi-day transits in South America.
