Family Adventure Vacations in Panama
How Many Spring Breaks Do You Have Left?
Before they're too cool for family adventure vacations. Before spring break means friends, not parents. Before "hanging out at home" sounds better than adventure.
You have a few precious years left. Maybe only a handful of spring breaks before they'd rather be anywhere but with you.
What if this year, instead of another theme park or resort pool, you gave them something they'll actually remember? A week where phones stay in pockets, where everyone gets dirty hiking to waterfalls, where your teenager admits (quietly) that this is actually pretty cool.
This isn't a vacation. It's the adventure your family will talk about for years.
For seven days, you'll surf together, hike rainforests, stand-up paddle on a cloud forest lake, visit an indigenous village, and fall asleep exhausted and happy every single night.
No packed tourist attractions. No fighting over screens. Just pure adventure, real connection, and the kind of memories that last long after childhood ends.

What Our Family Adventure Vacations Look Like
No schedules to stress about. No tourist crowds. Just your family and a few other adventurous families exploring Panama together.

Your mornings are active
Surfing lessons where everyone wipes out and laughs about it. Hiking to hidden waterfalls. Stand-up paddleboarding across a cloud forest lake.

Your afternoons are yours
Siesta in a hammock, swim at the beach, treat yourself to a massage, or join a yoga class while the kids enjoy art projects and camp activities.

Your evenings bring you together
Sharing fresh meals with your family. Bonfires under the stars. Movie nights for kids while parents enjoy happy hour.

Guest Reviews and Stories

I traveled to Panama with my daughters for a family and friends Peace Corps reunion and had a fantastic time! I could not recommend enough Sean and Ayesha’s place. They are wonderful hosts plus the food, planned excursions, and pristine beach accessible within a 10 minute walk were amazing! Highlights included catching an ocean sunrise, enjoying a beach bonfire, and simply relaxing. If you enjoy traveling off the beaten path without many tourists for an authentic and safe experience, I recommend staying here.

Words cannot describe how amazing my stay was at Istmo! Sean and Ayesha were honestly the best hosts. The entire experience was carefully planned out to ensure we had the best retreat experience possible. From beach walks, to meals with our group, to adventures of SUP boarding and hiking, each day was unique. I cannot even get over how amazing the food was: The variety of good and nourishing foods was impeccable. I cannot wait to return to Istmo in the future, because it truly was a life-changing visit.

We had the best time at our first mother-daughter retreat! The atmosphere was perfect, with delicious food, amazing yoga, and a beautiful environment. Even my 14-year-old daughter loved it! She went surfing, enjoyed a delicious black bean burger, and didn’t even miss meat with the tasty vegetarian options.
The rooms were clean and comfortable, and we had a fantastic time. We’re already planning to return and highly recommend this retreat, especially for mother-daughter duos!

Frequently Asked Questions
General Information About Istmo & Family Adventure Vacations
We're a small, family-owned retreat center nestled in Panama's coastal mountains, founded by returned Peace Corps volunteers Sean and Ayesha Davis. With decades of combined experience in education, international development, and environmental engineering, we've created a place where families can disconnect from daily stress and reconnect through shared adventure. We're not a resort or hotel—we're a family welcoming yours into our home, where every detail is designed to help you explore, bond, and create memories that last long after you've returned home.
Everything you need for a week of adventure and connection: 7 days/6 nights in private air-conditioned bungalows, three fresh locally-sourced meals daily (all dietary needs accommodated), roundtrip airport transfers from Panama City, all transportation to activities, guided waterfall hike, cloud forest lake paddleboarding, Emberá village cultural visit, professional surf lessons, local artisan market visit, evening kids' programs (art, camp activities, movie night), evening adult programs (optional yoga, happy hour), family bonfires, and access to hammock spaces, meditation labyrinth, and nature trails. Daily housekeeping and Wi-Fi included throughout.
Yes! Every family gets their own private, air-conditioned bungalow with comfortable beds and a private bathroom. You'll have your own space to retreat to while still being part of the larger group experience during meals and activities.
The activities on this retreat—waterfall hikes, stand-up paddleboarding, surf lessons, and full-day excursions—require a certain level of physical stamina, attention span, and independence. Kids 10+ can participate fully in all activities, follow instructions from guides, and genuinely enjoy the adventure rather than just endure it. We've found this age creates the best experience for both kids and parents, and allows families with children of different ages to all participate together.
No, this is a family retreat where children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. However, if you have a unique situation (such as a teenager traveling with another family), contact us directly and we'll discuss options.
We’re just 1 hour and 15 minutes from Panama City, and only 10 minutes from the town of Coronado.
If you need to pick up anything, Coronado has supermarkets, pharmacies, shops, and even a modern clinic with English-speaking doctors. At Istmo, you get the best of both worlds—immersed in nature while having convenient amenities nearby.
Travel, Arrival & Logistics

Yes! Roundtrip airport or city transfers are included in all Digital Detox Retreat packages.
If you want to stay longer at Istmo or join us in between a retreat, that is always possible! Just contact us before booking so we can help you out. We’re also happy to recommend options for extending your trip in Panama!
Panama enjoys a tropical climate, with two main seasons: the dry season and the rainy (green) season.
- Dry season (Mid-December to Mid-April): Expect sunny, warm weather with little to no rain—ideal for escaping the cold up North.
- Transitional season (Late April to Early May): The dry season shifts into the green season, so you may experience a mix of sunny and rainy days as the lush season begins.
- Green/rainy season (June to November): This is our favorite time of year when the countryside is at its greenest. Afternoon rain showers are common but typically short, lasting no more than two hours. Most of the day remains clear for outdoor activities, and the rain offers a refreshing break from the heat.
- Rainiest months (October & November): While these are the wettest months, rain usually comes in short bursts, so it’s rare to experience all-day rain. Tropical showers are often a welcome cool down.
We’re about 1 hour 45 minutes from PTY, depending on traffic.
Panama uses the US dollar.

Meals, Health & Safety
Yes! All meals are included in your stay. Enjoy three delicious meals a day, freshly prepared by our private chef using locally sourced ingredients. This includes dinner on arrival day and breakfast on departure day. We accommodate all dietary preferences and offer a daily fresh fruit snack to keep you energized.
Please note that dining at restaurants outside of Istmo is not included.
Absolutely! We accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary needs. Just let us know in advance.
During regular hours, an English-speaking hospital is just a 15-minute drive from our property. For emergencies after 9 PM, there is a 24-hour public hospital only 7 minutes away. Additionally, our owner, Sean Davis, is a trained EMT, and in case of an emergency, we’ll personally assist in getting you to the nearest clinic.
Please note that we require all participants to purchase travel insurance, as we are not liable for medical expenses. You will also be asked to complete a waiver form before your stay.
Our retreat is located in a small, safe rural and beach community. With our three friendly dogs as our 24-hour security, we’ve never felt the need for a fence or a security guard. We do recommend general safety precautions, such as not leaving valuables unattended on the beach and avoid solo trips to the beach too early or too late.
Overall, Panama is a very safe country for travelers, and we are confident you’ll feel at ease during your stay.
In most areas of Panama, including Istmo Retreat, the tap water is generally considered safe to drink. However, if you're staying in more rural areas or places where water quality may vary, it's recommended to drink bottled or purified water for peace of mind.
At Istmo, we provide purified drinking water for all our guests to ensure you stay hydrated and comfortable throughout your stay.
During the day, mosquitos are not a problem. They typically come out at dawn and dusk, so we recommend wearing light long sleeves and pants or using bug spray during those times.
